‘Ene’io Botanical Gardens Photo Gallery
Absolutely unique within the Kingdom and the South Pacific, the ‘Ene’io Botanical Gardens in Vava’u are the remarkable lifetime creation of Haniteli Fa’anunu.
Since his childhood, Haniteli has been creating - planting and tending his gardens as he set out to establish something both delightful and extraordinary to be shared with others.
‘Ene’io Botanical Gardens is home to a variety of native plants (many rare and endangered), a gift shop, a cafe as well as a gorgeous beach.
The gardens themselves are home to every known species of plant native to Tonga (some 500 plus) as well as many others from the Pacific.
Much of the plant life are important sources of food, clothing, building materials and medicines. To the delight of visitors, Haniteli and his wife, Lucy, also organise demonstrations of how the plants are used for weaving, vanilla cultivation, tapa making, nonu juice manufacturing as well as the many uses of coconuts.
From a childhood vision and passion for the land to a university education in Agronomics (Hawaii) followed by the continual investment of his own finances and labour into the project over some 60 years, the ‘Ene’io Botanical Gardens are now shared willingly.
